Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a research-proven intervention for young children with disruptive behaviors such as tantrums, difficulty listening, hitting or kicking, difficulty playing with others.
There are two phases to PCIT. Phase 1 focuses on increasing warmth in the caregiver/child relationship using skills proven to help children feel calm, and to increase pro-social behaviors such as sharing and taking turns. Phase 2 offers strategies to help children accept limits, follow directions, and to develop good behavior at home and in public. Therapists teach caregivers these skills, then coach caregivers in real time from behind a one-way mirror using a "bug-in-the-ear" device.
